SUMMER VOLUNTEER TRAINING SESSION #1

This training session is for kids who have applied to be summer volunteers. Summer volunteers must be 11 years old or going into 6th grade in fall. All volunteers must attend one training session, unless they have been volunteering at the library during the school year. The training session will last about 2 hours.

If you haven't turned in an application yet, you must do so before this training session. You can get one from the Children's Department, or download it (below). Fill it out, get it signed by a parent or guardian, and return it to the Children’s Department (NOT the Circulation Desk, please!), so that we can sign you up for a time to work.

You must also read The Spiel (training & orientation material for volunteers) before you attend your training session. If you haven't received one yet, you can download it (below) or pick it up from the Children's Department.

Astrology Star Chart-Reading Class

Learn what the day, time, and place you were born can tell you about yourself!

Professional astrologer Sally Cragin will teach you how to read your astrological "star chart," and help you understand what it can tell you about yourself!

We will use an astrology website to create your star chart, and then Sally will teach you the basics of astrology. Please bring the date, exact time, and exact place of your birth with you so that we can make an accurate chart for you!

Peter Mandel hunts his stories and photos in the world's far corners, including Antarctica, India, Egypt, Patagonia, the fjords of Norway, the mountain pathways of Japan, and the deserts of Africa. The author of ten books, he'll show slides of his most extreme travel experiences—surviving a coup in Ecuador, visiting a ‘city’ of penguins at the South Pole, fishing for piranha on Brazil’s Rio Negro, floating in the Goodyear Blimp, sailing on an Arctic icebreaker, camping in the African bush, and kayaking to the Statue of Liberty—and talk about how adventure travel turns to prose in today's media.  

Presenter: Peter Mandel, An award-winning adventure travel journalist for The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, National Geographic, and The Providence Journal.
