SUMMER READING PROGRAM FOR PRESCHOOLERS, CHILDREN, AND TEENS
It’s never been more important to keep reading during the summer!
Summer reading programs support your child or teen to read or be read to regularly, which is the best way to maintain—or even improve—their reading level & skills and foster a life-long love of reading.
Print out the reading log for the summer program below, or you can pick one up at the curbside check in area (the old entrance) of the library.
If you're using it for an independent reader (generally ages 7-17), have them read at least 20 minutes a day (or choose a longer goal).
If you're using it for a beginning reader, have them read at least 10 minutes or 1 book a day if you’re a beginning reader (a choose whatever goal will be most supportive to their reading efforts).
If you're using it for a pre-reader (a child who is not reading on their own yet or is primarily being read to), try to read to them for at least 5 minutes a day.
*Feel free to adapt these guidelines to whatever will best support your child's or teen's reading.*
They need to do at least 42 days (6 weeks) of the summer to be considered finished, though more is encouraged! When they’re done, you can return their completed reading to the Library if we are open, put it in the Book Drop if we’re not (& it is) take a picture of the completed chart & email it to hubbardyouthroom@gmail.com, or mail it to:
Hubbard Memorial Library, attn. Youth Room
24 Center St.
Ludlow MA 01056
EVERYONE WHO HANDS IN THEIR LOG WILL GET AN ENVELOPE OF PRIZES,but we will also be raffling off 12 themed grand prize baskets & bags on 9/1/20.

RESCHEDULED: "Heroes Academy" LARP (Live Action Role Play) Adventure Program!
11:00am - 7:00pm
Thanks to a Summer Learning grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, we will offer a fabulous all day in-person LARP program!
"Imagine…If you could walk into your favorite book, play, TV show, or movie... what if you could become your favorite character in this story? A story where you control all the decisions, actions, and directions of this character? What if you could influence the outcome of the story in this fantastic world? What would you do? What would you become?"
LARP Adventure Program is a combination of theater, martial arts, and costume/prop/stage design. We combine these arts with critical thinking, creative problem solving, and community leadership skills in a safe, socially distant format that takes place outdoors on Library grounds and in surrounding park areas. 5th & 6th graders create their own characters and play out a storyline quest. Older teens can be Non-Playing Characters (NPCs) and help run the game. Come and be part of the unique interdisciplinary experience that the LARP Adventure Program offers!
The event will lead by the certified instructors and assistant instructors of LARP Adventure Program. Each instructor has at least four years of experience in LARP’s program. The instructors will teach middle school-aged youth how to be responsible for themselves, while high-school aged youth can CIT and learn event management, leadership skills, and personal development tools for a successful life.
Rules for maintaining 6' distance at all times and wearing masks will be built into the game. Participants will need to bring their own water bottles and non-perishable bagged lunches.
This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Unicorn Story Walk with LIVE UNICORNS!
2:00pm - 3:00pm
PROGRAM IS FULL!
*PLEASE READ REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS BELOW*
Join us for a unicorn-themed Story Walk around the park and library grounds with real, live unicorns on display!
Poster versions of the words and illustrations of a children's picture book about a wise unicorn, a loyal dragon, and a little girl who team up to save their forest will be installed throughout Library Park and the Hubbard Library grounds. Readers will move from station to station to follow the story line, and end up in front of the library, where a temporary, outdoor circulation desk will be set up so that children can check out related books (bring your library card!). AND along the way there will be three real, live unicorns, sponsored by the Ludlow Cultural Council!
Registration is required. Story walks tend to be naturally socially distant events, but in order to ensure safety, we will assign each family an arrival time during the 1 hour event to eliminate congestion, and ask everyone to strictly maintain 6' distance from other families, the unicorn handlers, and library employees. Everyone 2 and up is required to wear a face mask over their mouths & noses during the entire event. Costumes are heartily welcomed!
Please click below to register. We will be taking registration by family groups instead of individually, so when filling out the registration, put the word "family" under child's name and your family's last name under last name; under "age" please put the number of family members who will be coming instead of a child's age. Example:
We will email you to schedule your arrival time!
The unicorns will only be at the library from 2-3pm, but the Story Walk will remain up for the rest of the week.
You can find out more about New Hampshire Unicorns here.
Sponsored by the Ludlow Cultural Council and the Selma May Memorial Fund.
